International English Language Testing System
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) provides a fair and accurate assessment of English language proficiency and assesses the ability to listen, read, write, and speak in English. It is the most popular test for those looking to migrate to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand and is globally recognized by employers, universities, schools, and immigration bodies. IELTS is graded on a scale of 1-9.
Program Introduction
IELTS course Singapore is IELTS Preparatory Course designed by Victoria World Academy to prepare students for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination.
Objective
The objective of this IELTS Preparatory Course is to develop students’ language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking and enable them to be prepared for the IELTS examinations.
Course Admission Requirements
Minimum Age
12 years old and above.
Academic Level
Must have attained the equivalent of Primary 6 in education in home country.
Language Proficiency
Victoria World Academy will administer English placement tests on all students to determine their English proficiency. Students will be classified according to their English proficiency and will be placed into respective classes.
Course Duration
Full-time Students
The course duration is 3 months. Classes will be 5 days a week, 3 hours a day.
Part-time Students
The course duration is 6 months. Classes will be 5 days a week, 1.5 hours a day.
It excludes Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday.
Course Modules
The entire course only consists of one module English Language – IELTS.
It will be taught according to the four skills:
- Listening
- Speaking
- Reading
- Writing
Course Synopsis
The course aims:
- To ensure that candidates have a fully operational command of the English language.
- To ensure that candidates’ use of English is appropriate, accurate and fluent, and shows complete understanding and sound interpretation and representation of texts and various audio-visual representations.
- To ensure that candidates possess a level of proficiency in the English language that will enable them to thrive and excel in higher education and the professional sphere.
- The ratio of teacher to student is 1:25.
Mode of Assessment
Internal Assessment
Assessment mode will largely be written for the reading and writing components. For the speaking component, the assessment mode will be verbal where candidates have to read from script and answer a few questions from the assessor. For the listening component, candidates will listen to an audio and answer questions on a question paper.
Internal Assessment Weightage and Grading
Each internal assessment will have equal weightage.
Grading of assessments will follow the scale:

7 | Good user | The test taker has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations. They generally handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning. |
6 | Competent user | The test taker has an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. They can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations. |
5 | Modest user | The test taker has a partial command of the language and copes with overall meaning in most situations, although they are likely to make many mistakes. They should be able to handle basic communication in their own field. |
4 | Limited user | The test taker’s basic competence is limited to familiar situations. They frequently show problems in understanding and expression. They are not able to use complex language. |
3 | Extremely limited user | The test taker conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. There are frequent breakdowns in communication. |
2 | Intermittent user | The test taker has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English. |
1 | Non-user | The test taker has no ability to use the language except a few isolated words. |
0 | Did not attempt the test | The test taker did not answer the questions. |
External Assessment

Listening Candidates will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write their answers to a series of questions. Assessors will be looking for evidence of candidates’ ability to understand the main ideas and detailed factual information, the opinions and attitudes of speakers, the purpose of an utterance and evidence of candidates’ ability to follow the development of ideas. |

Reading The reading section consists of 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for details, skimming, understanding logical argument and recognising writers’ opinions, attitudes, and purpose. There are three reading passages with a variety of questions using a number of task types. |

Speaking Part 1 – the examiner will ask the candidate general questions about the candidate and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minute. Part 2 – candidate will be given a card which asks about a particular topic. Candidate will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic. Part 3 – candidate will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These will give the candidate an opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes. |

Writing Task 1 – candidate will be presented a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in candidate’s own words. Candidate may be asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object or event. Task 2 – Candidate will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style. |

Victoria World Academy subscribes to these regulatory provisions and requirements in its collection of fees from full-time students.
